Official: Jordi Cruyff signs new contract as Barça's sporting director

Cruyff has been doing the role since July but signed the deal on Friday

Jordi Cruyff has signed his contract to become FC Barcelona's new sporting director of football, the club announced on Friday. He had been fulfilling in the role since July 1.

Barça said: "An FC Barcelona player from 1993 to 1996, Cruyff returned to the club last season as director of the international area of the football section and played a key role in the two most recent transfer windows as a member of the Sporting Commission."

As revealed by SPORT, Barça are delighted with Cruyff's work since he came in and consider him a key part of the project being built under Joan Laporta's presidency.

In addition, his relationship with general manager Mateu Alemany is very good and they work well together. Jordi focuses more on players and Mateu on the numbers.

Speaking to Barça TV, Cruyff said: "Since I arrived I have felt comfortable working with all the team. It's important that there is communication and in this sense it is very clear with Xavi, Mateu and the president.

"It is a very special moment in my life. For years there have been talks about coming back to the club in different roles, but I think it was the perfect moment to return. 

"It's a huge responsibility but I like challenges and I am delighted to work for a club as special as Barça."
