In the two international breaks Pique has travelled much further than Spain squad players have

After the World Cup, Gerard Pique stood by his decision to retire from the Spanish national team. He would have the FIFA breaks to recharge his batteries and Barca would be the big beneficiaries. Things haven’t gone quite like that.

Pique’s motivation to create a new Davis Cup took him to New York in September, when the US Open was on, and he spent five days in the USA, going to the semi-finals between Osaka and Keys and Nadal against Del Potro.

Meanwhile his Spanish team-mates Sergi Roberto and Sergio Busquets did half the km travelling with Spain to England and then facing Croatia in Elche.

Now there’s a new break. And Pique has been in China, continuing to push his tennis plans attending the Masters 1000 in Shanghai to speak to Novak Djokovic. That’s 10,000 km there and 10,000 km back for Pique. Busquets went to Madrid, Cardiff and Sevilla, for a total of 5,500 km.

Pique had already been in Orlando in the summer after the club gave him permission to go to the International Tennis Federation assembly three days before the season started.

Pique has not been able to rest during Barca games either, playing every minute - and he’s needed more than ever now with Umtiti and Vermaelen out. On Wednesday he was in Madrid, speaking to the media, about tennis.
