Mono Burgos: If Maradona played here, Messi will play for Newell's

Simeone's No.2 believes the Barça star will return to Rosario to play one day

Newell's Old Boys coach Mono Burgos says Lionel Messi will return to the club one day as speculation continues to surround the Barcelona star's next move.

Burgos, Diego Simeone's No.2 at Atletico Madrid for the last decade, took over at Newell's recently and has expressed his belief that Messi will follow him back to Rosario at some point.

"If Diego Maradona played here, Leo's going to want to play in the Primera Division with Newell's, too," Burgos said. "I think it will happen at some point. I hope it's soon.

"I don't think he will leave Barcelona (yet) because it's his home, as Newell's is, but I think he will pass through here, as I said."

Remember that Messi started his career at Newell's, playing for the club between 1994 and 1999 before making the move to Barcelona in 2000.

He has admitted on more than one occasion that he would like to play for the club again, although recently he's also spoken about his desire to play in Major League Soccer in the United States.

Messi is out of contract in the summer but a return to Newell's or a move to the U.S isn't expected to happen until further down the road.
