A Barcelona court has agreed to replace the 21-month term

Messi's father Jorge will also exchange his sentence for a fine

A Barcelona court has approved the decision to substitue Lionel Messi's 21-month prison sentence for a fine worth 252,000 euros, it was confirmed on Friday.

Leo Messi was found guilty of tax fraud on earnings from his image rights between 2007 and 2009 and handed a 21-month jail term, but that has not been replaced with a fine.

The original sentence also condemned Jorge Messi to a 15-month prison sentence (after appeal) and that has also been exchanged for a fine of around 180,000 euros.

Both were convicted of tax fraud totalling 4.1 million euros by using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay as well as shell companies in the U.K. and Switzerland.
