Marca report that FIFA will not run the award this season

The coronavirus crisis continues to see events cancelled and according to Marca FIFA have decided this year's The Best ceremony will not go ahead.

The Best, which crowns the best male and female footballer of the past year, is currently held by Lionel Messi, but he will not be able to retain it in 2020.

FIFA's decision comes as the organisation also postponed a number of events due to the Covid-19 pandemic, including the Futbol Sala World Cup. There has been no decision yet on the Club World Cup.

The Best was going to take place in Milan in September. It remains to be seen what France Football will do with the Ballon d'Or this year.

Ronaldo won the first two editions of  The Best, in 206 and 2017, and Luka Modric won it in 2018, before Messi's triumph last year.
