The Argentine was not in the top three for the first time since 2006

Monday was a big day for many people in the football galaxy. The Ballon d'Or ceremony was the centre of attention. The runway at the Grand Palace in Paris was dyed with magnificent players as France Football ran down the best 30 players in the world over the past year (as voted for by journalists).

In the end, the winner was who everyone knew it would be: Real Madrid's Luka Modric. Griezmann, Buffon, Modric, Mbappé, a room filled with top players. But the best wasn't there, the player who's been king of this sport for years. Lionel Messi was at home.

The Barça forward let the world know shortly after the award was given that he wasn't bothered, as he posted a photograph with two of his own "Ballons d'Or"... two of his sons. Messi uploaded the picture on Instagram stories with Thiago and Mateo just after Modric received the prize.

For the first time since 2006, the Argentine was not even in the top three (he came fifth). A genuine aberration. Not that he seems worried. That majority know that these prizes don't mean everything.
