Despite not being enough to take Barça to the final, it was crowned the best goal from last season's tournament
Finally something good has come out of FC Barcelona's disastrous defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final. Lionel Messi's wonderful freekick in the first leg which made it 3-0 on the night has been chosen by UEFA as the best goal of last season's competition. The effort from 30 yards out against one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Alisson Becker, was worthy of winning any match.
It was in the 81st minute at the Camp Nou. Despite not putting on the best performance, Valverde's side found themselves 2-0 up on the night. A freekick within striking distance is always left to the little Argentine. Messi stepped up and did what he does best: finding the corner of the goal. It was his 12th goal in 9 Champions League matches. The return leg didn't see him add to his tally.
