Memphis Depay's big challenge against Athletic Bilbao
The Barcelona forward has netted in the first two games of each of the past four seasons
Memphis Depay is causing a stir. Since he joined it was clear he was a different, special player. The former Olympique Lyon star already said at his presentation he wouldn’t need long to hit his best form. “It’s something genetic,” he said. “Before, when I was younger, I went to the gym, but for a while I haven’t been going because I don’t need to gain more volume.”
The Dutchman usually starts seasons well. In the last four he’s scored at least a goal in the first two games. Last season he scored a hat-trick against Dijon in the first Ligue 1 game.
In this way, and after not scoring against Real Sociedad despite putting in a fine performance, Memphis has the challenge of extending that run to five seasons in a row at San Mames tonight.
He’s shown a good connection with Griezmann in the games against Juve and Real Sociedad. Koeman knew they would link up well from the start. Memphis will also be in charge of set pieces without Messi, taking corners, free kicks, and maybe even penalties.
