Lionel Messi received the Pichichi trophy on Monday from last season, and he spoke about the upcoming Clasico, saying that if Barcelona win the game they will have "an sizeable advantage" on their biggest rivals, Real Madrid.

"It would be good to win the game for what it means, we would get a sizeable advantage, even though there is a long way to go," he said. "It would be nice to see off the year with a win and have a merry Christmas."

Messi scored 37 goals last season and that earned him "a prize for the whole team", which was handed to him at the Marca awards ceremony. He said that his main objective was not individual awards but "winning the best titles possible".

This is Messi's fourth Pichichi award, after 2009-10, 2011-12 and 2012-13. Only four players have won more - Zarra (6), Di Stefano, Quini and Hugo Sanchez (5). Puskas has four too.

DOUBLE WINNER

Messi also won the Di Stefano award, given to the best player in La Liga. "I had the chance to meet Di Stefano and he was always very friendly with me," added Messi.

OTHER AWARDS

Jan Oblak won the Zamora trophy, while Asier Garitano and Jose Luis Mendilibar won best coach. Best referee went to Martinez Munuera.
