The duo had not started a game together for a long time but are now club team-mates

Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero played together for Argentina for the 88th time in the 1-0 win over Paraguay. They both started for the first time since November 18, 2019, over two and a half years.

Papu Gomez’s goal in the 10th minute separated the teams and it means Lionel Scaloni’s team are progressing from Group A in the Copa America.

Messi played the 90 minutes whereas Kun went off after around an hour.

“He made an enormous effort after such a large period of inactivity, his game was good, I think it’s the way forward,” said the coach.

Barca’s No 10, despite not scoring, had a fine game. 81 per cent pass accuracy, two shots at goal, five dribbles completed and 12 duels won. Leo is determined to win a title with Argentina and knows this Copa America could be the chance to.

Next season Messi and Aguero will share the pitch for Barcelona too, and their friendship goes way back. They played for the first time in the U20 World Cup in 2005, in which they beat Nigeria in the final. They also won gold in the 2008 Peking Olympics.

In the 88 games together, Messi has scored nine goals with Aguero assisting, and the same in reverse. The last came in that game in 2019, the last time they started together, a friendly against Uruguay that finished 2-2, with Aguero netting from a Messi assist.
