Lionel Messi closed the circle. On November 2, 2005, the Argentine scored his first goal in Europea against Panathinaikos. Virtually 12 years later, on October 18, 2017, he struck against another Greek side, Olympiakos.
Messi's free-kick means he is the first elite player to hit 50 goals in 2017, by calendar year.
Messi has now hit 50 goals or more four years running. In 2014 he scored 58, in 2015 52, in 2016 he got 53 and now he has 50 again, a figure which could increase in the upcoming 10 games he has left in the year.
On a goalscoring level 2012 was his best year. Messi hit an unbelievable 91 goals, an astronomic number which made history, with no other player achieving it.
