The Argentine forward scored a brilliant goal but then failed from the spot
Barcelona traveled to Paris without pressure, with nothing to lose and a lot to gain. That’s why the elimination from the Champions League is not a morale blow. They were hopeful but realistic, knowing a KO was most likely coming in France. The team were proud of the image they gave. Football wise, they were superior.
However there was one player who found it harder to smile after the game - Leo Messi. Not because he was not satisfied with his performance or that of the team, but because he missed the penalty just before half time, which could have had a big impact on the game.
The No 10 knows that moment could have brought Barcelona closer to the miracle. Guardiola, Luis Suarez and others have explained that Leo doesn’t even like to lose at marbles. He is self-critical and always wants more. His amazing goal from 30 yards is not enough for him.
At full-time Angel di Maria and other PSG players spoke to Leo, but he was not happy, still thinking about that penalty.
At 33, Leo has been through it all and he knows that even if he scored, it would still be very hard. Now he has to focus on the potential double that lies ahead. It’s time to turn the page and keep going.
