Leo Messi knocking on Xavi's door in search for records

The Argentine forward set up a goal in the 1-0 win over Huesca, his 750th Barca game

Leo Messi is chasing down Xavi Hernandez’s record for most FC Barcelona appearances, set between 1998 and 2015. The Al-Sadd coach played 767 times for Barca, 505 of those in La Liga. Now the No 10 is 18 games away from overtaking the former skipper, and six from beating the league tally.

Messi could not celebrate his 750th appearance (500th in La Liga) with a goal against Huesca, but he got an assist in the 1-0 victory for Frenkie de Jong. With the 40 he has for Argentina, that’s a total of 300 assists in competitive football.

He has 644 goals (451 in La Liga) too, at the 500 game mark, but is still some way off Andoni Zubizarreta’s record of 622 appearances in the Spanish top flight, for Athletic, Barca and Valencia.

Messi, barring any injury setback, will make history in the months to come.
