Laporta: I know what Xavi thinks about the team Barcelona have

The Barça president would not confirm if Xavi will be the new coach though

Joan Laporta doesn't want to put negotiations to appoint Ronald Koeman's successor in danger and tried to limit talking about Xavi Hernandez, the favourite to take over as Barcelona's coach, in a press conference on Friday.

"We're working on a new coach," Laporta said. "I am not going to say the options we have. It would not be professional. We don't want to damage anything."

Negotiations, SPORT have reported, are ongoing and an agreement is closer all the time, although nothing has been finalised just yet.

However, Laporta was willing to speak about Xavi in general

"Xavi is evolving well as a coach," Laporta said. "I have great references from people that know more than me in that regard. I speak with him often. We have and have always had a great friendship, despite what's been said by some media outlets.

"I know his opinion and what he thinks about the squad and what we need to do. My opinion of him as a coach is very good. I haven't seen [many of his games] with Al Sadd, but I have watched Barca games with him speaking on the phone.

"But I prefer not to speak about Xavi. He's an option but we have several. One day Xavi will coach Barça. I trust the people I have around me and follow Xavi's evolution."
