Clubs in Spain can now spend 50% of anything they save if they are in excess of limit

LaLiga have decided to slightly relax the restrictions imposed by the salary cap regulations in order to allow Spanish clubs to be more competitive in the summer transfer window.

With the reformulation of the rule, the part of the savings that can be used for transfers will increase from 40% to 50% for the 2023/24 season.

To take this step forward, as explained by Cadena Cope, the 20 La Liga clubs have modified Article 100 of their regulations.

From now on, entities that exceed their salary limit will even be allowed to use up to 60% of the money they save on a transfer if the departing player's salary was more than 5% of their limit to sign new players.

LaLiga clubs have been given the green light by president Javier Tebas and his executive team to lower their financial control for the transfer window, which officially starts on 1 July.

This increase in the margin to 50% should help to reactivate a transfer market that has had practically no activity as LaLiga clubs have found themselves without sufficient financial muscle, not only to cope with the avalanche of millions of euros from Saudi Arabia or MLS, but also to compete with the other big European leagues, with the Premier League at the forefront.

Barça to take advantage of the new salary cap

One of the clubs that will benefit from the measure is Barça, who in recent seasons have been severely restricted by exceeding the salary limit set out in the aforementioned Article 100.

The measure opens the door to make it a little easier for them to register not only players who have renewed their contracts (Araujo, Gavi, Sergi Roberto and Balde) but also new signings such as Ilkay Gündogan.

With the new situation, clubs will be able to use 50% of the money they save on registering signings; a figure that will be increased to 60% if the contract of the transferred player out (money saved) accounts for more than 5% of the wage bill.

At Barça, this has been the case with captain Sergio Busquets.
