LaLiga could suspend the competition for at least two weeks

Head of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, will meet with LaLiga and the AFE today and there's a strong chance the league will be suspended for two weeks

Spanish football is awaiting the verdict of a meeting between the three main organisations: the RFEF (Spanish FA), LaLiga and the AFE (Player's Association). The only thing on the agenda is whether or not the leagues, both LaLiga and LaLiga 2, are postponed for two weeks.

The highest-profile match which has been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak is the Copa del Rey final between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. It was originally scheduled for the 18th April but has been put on hold indefinitely until the current situation changes.

The president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, met with both Athletic and La Real yesterday to discuss options and the clubs dismissed the idea of the match being played behind closed doors. It's likely to be moved to the final week of May.

Now there's a much bigger decision to make. Both the RFEF and AFE are in favour of cancelling all scheduled matches for two weeks whilst LaLiga would prefer for "the show" to go on, albeit behind closed doors, in order for them to conform with the TV and sponsorship deals they've signed.

The RFEF actually have the power to cancel, postpone or reschedule matches due to extreme circumstances so don't actually need LaLiga to be on board with their decision.

There's growing pressure on LaLiga to follow the lead of other organisations as the world looks to prevent the spread of coronavirus. In a private conversation, a Barça director claimed he was told that Liverpool-Atletico Madrid was likely to be the final match of the Champions League this season. Sevilla and Getafe's matches against Italian opposition, Roma and Inter respectively, have already been cancelled.

Barça-Napoli is in danger of being postponed as Italy is on a total lockdown due to how widespread the virus is in the country. All flights between Spain and Italy have been cancelled.

UEFA is yet to announce an official position on the status of their competitions but everything suggests both competitions will be indefinitely put on hold until the situation changes.
