La Liga breaks records as it closes in on Premier League spending
Spanish clubs have shut the spending gap between themselves and English clubs
La Liga spent more than ever before in the summer transfer window, with clubs spending 1,319 million euros on players in response to the Premier League's domination of last season's Champions League, won by Liverpool in an all-England final.
Those are the conclusions which have been drawn by the Football Transfer Review 2020, which collects the data, analyses and looks to make sense of transfers among Europe's biggest clubs.
Esteve Calzada (CEO de Prime Time Sport) presented the report on Thursday in Portugal. The stand out date was the amount spent by La Liga (1,319 million) and the fact it was closer than previously to the Premier League's spending (1,519 million).
The third league was Italy's Serie A, with 1,178 million spent on signings, recovering ground lost in past seasons to Germany's Bundesliga and France's Ligue 1.
Real Madrid returned to the top of the ranking, spending 305 million. Barcelona were placed just behind (255 million) and Atletico were also close (243 million) following a summer of big spending by Spain's top three.
