Koeman's double pivot system with Barça will debut against Villarreal
Busquets and De Jong will be given the chance to dominate midfield in the Dutchman's LaLiga debut
FC Barcelona return to action in LaLiga with a desire to show something different after a poor campaign last time out. Ronald Koeman is the new man in the dugout and he's got a distinctive style and system which should make his changes more visible. He wants a more solid base in midfield, using a double divot, whilst demanding the team press higher up the pitch again.
The rehearsals during preseason should give an idea of the XI Koeman will start with against Villarreal. In fact, the only question mark is who will start on the left: Ansu Fati or Ousmane Dembele? Although it appears the La Masia star is likely to get the nod.
As it was for the defence
With Marc-Andre ter Stegen still a few weeks away, Neto will line up in goal. Nelson Semedo has completed his move to Wolves so that means the only option at right back is Sergi Roberto. He could soon be joined by Sergiño Dest. Pique and Lenglet will be the centre back pairing with Jordi Alba on the left.
Sergio Busquets and Frenkie de Jong are set to be the first duo to form Koeman's double pivot. Miralem Pjanic is still building up his fitness and could make an appearance off the bench.
Ansu or Dembele?
The three ahead of those two, but behind the striker, should see Griezmann, Coutinho and Fati handed starts. The Frenchman would start on the right with Coutinho down the middle. This leaves Lionel Messi to play as a false nine. Although this system allows for all four to switch positions.
Riqui Puig and Konrad de la Fuente could be options off the bench too. The American in particular has impressed throughout preseason.
Not needed
Koeman will confirm his final squad list this morning but it's expected that Umtiti, Rafinha and Todibo won't be involved..
Albiol is a doubt
Villarreal are likely to field the same XI as they did last time out with the only doubt being Raul Albiol. He is suffering from a broken nose but could be allowed to play with a a mask.
Gerard Moreno and Paco Alcacer are the forward duo Barça must keep in check if they are to emerge victorious.
