The former Barcelona coach spoke to the media on Thursday at a golf event

Ronald Koeman has given his first public appearance in Barcelona since being sacked as the club's coach in October after a 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

"When I left we were eight points behind Real Madrid, now it is nearly double," the Dutch coach said at the presentation of the Koeman Cup golf event, with proceeds going to the Cruyff Foundation.

After the loss in Vallecas under Koeman, Barça dropped to ninth in the table with 16 points from 33 possible. Madrid were leaders at the time with 24 points, eight ahead of the Catalans.

The arrival of Xavi Hernandez has revolutionised the club and they have climbed to second on the back of seven successive defeats recently, in addition to winning 0-4 at the Bernabeu.

However, defeats to Cadiz and Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou recently have slowed them down and knocked them out of the LaLiga title race, leaving them 15 points behind Madrid.
