Key week for Ronald Araujo's renewal with Barcelona

The Uruguayan wants to stay but the club aren't getting near his demands

Barcelona want to tie Ronald Araujo down to a new deal. It’s proving complicated as the two sides are far apart at the moment. Barcelona’s last offer was half of what he wanted. Barcelona know that Araujo has various offers from the Premier League but also wants to stay at Camp Nou. If they want to keep him, though, they will need to raise their offer.

Conversations with Araujo stopped in December. The club prioritised signing Ansu Fati and Pedri to new deals, and then the January market, before restarting negotiations with the Uruguayan.

The first offer was 3m euros a year net plus objectives. Araujo wanted double and his agents see the salary that Andreas Christensen is earning, a player who will have to earn a starting spot.

Right now, Araujo is Barcelona’s best centre-back, the leader of the defence, so his people expect Barca to make a bigger effort.

If negotiations break then Man United will move for him in the summer. But Barcelona would be mad to let a defender who can mark the next era go, even with Christensen signed.

Antonio Rudiger is another option as he is out of contract but he wants a lot of money, so renewing Araujo would be more economical. Xavi is pressing for the renewal to be completed. The coming days will be decisive.
