Invincible: Barcelona end 2019 unbeaten at Camp Nou

The Catalans did not lose a single game at home across the entire calendar year

The objective was to get three points, which was essential if Barcelona wanted to remain ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the table heading into 2020.

They managed that with a 4-1 win over Alaves at Camp Nou on Saturday, which means only a 6-0 win against Athletic Club on Sunday would see Madrid move back to the top of the table.

Antoine Griezmann and Arturo Vidal both scored in the first half against Alaves before Pere Pons pulled one back. Lionel Messi and a Luis Suarez penalty rounded off the win, though.

FORTRESS CAMP NOU

But remaining top was not the only motivation for Barca. Avoiding defeat also meant that they managed to end 2019 without losing a game at Camp Nou. Barca have been invincible at their fortress throughout the calendar year.

The win against Alaves was their 24th at home in all competitions. In 28 games at Camp Nou, they have only even drawn four (twice against Real Madrid, once against Valencia and once against Slavia Prague).

Barca end the year with 81 goals scored and 20 against, with their 24 wins spread out in the following way: 17 in La Liga, five in the Champions League and two in the Copa del Rey.
