'Hunter' Messi has two new targets in his sight as he moves towards another record

With 469 official goals, the Argentine star is closing in on Europe's all-time highest one-club goalscorers

Lionel Messi continues to break all kinds of records. The Barcelona star has scored 469 official goals in a Blaugrana shirt now after his strike against Sevilla last weekend.

Such stratospheric numbers allow him to target legendary forwards like the German Gerd Muller and the Portuguese Eusebio. In fact, Messi is just four goals behind Benfica’s best every player, Eusebio, who scored 473 goals and is still the second top one-club scorer in European football history.

A little further ahead, but not too far, is ‘Torpedo’ Muller, who leads the list thanks to the 525 goals he scored during the 60s and the 70s with Bayern Munich.

It’s clear that Messi will end up breaking the majority of goalscoring records which have ever existed. Eusebio is already within his sights. Given the 29-year-old’s form, it’s a matter of time before he hunts down the Portuguese forward.

Messi has already past other players such as Ian Rush, Liverpool’s star in the 80s who ended his Reds career with 348 goals, and Real Madrid greats Raul Gonzalez and Alfredo Di Stefano, who scored 323 and 307 respectively.

Long left in his dust on a goalscoring level are also Johan Cruyff (271 with Ajax), Guiseppe Meazza (288 with Inter), Bobby Charlton (249 with Manchester United) and Thierry Henry (226 with Arsenal).

It’s worth remembering that Messi has already been able to double the total of the second top scorer in the history of Barcelona: Cesar Rodriguez. The forward who played in the 40s and the 50s scored 232 goals, a record which Messi surpassed four years ago now.

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken into the top five of one-club scorers, too, but he’s 97 goals behind Messi, although he did spend his early years at Sporting Club and Man United.
