How VAR will debut at Camp Nou on Saturday in new Liga season
González González will take charge of VAR for Barcelona vs Alaves in his 10th year in the top flight
Jose Luis Gonzalez Gonzalez, the veteran referee, has been designated by the refereeing committee to be the VAR referee at Camp Nou when Barcelona kick off the season against Deportivo Alaves.
The ref is entering his 10th season in Spanish top flight football, the third most experiences ref behind Undiano Mallenco and Mateo Lahoz. He will be accompanied by Ruben Becerril as VAR assistant for a game which Murcian referee Sanchez Martinez will take charge of.
Historical, with this being the first time VAR is used in La Liga. There will be the main ref, the two assistants, the fourth official, the VAR ref and the assistant on VAR. Seven in total. And we can add the video operator for each game in the Var Centre in the Ciudad del Futbol.
Meanwhile Catalan referee David Medie Jimenez is the youngest in the division, turning 34 on August 24, and he will be VAR ref at the Santiago Bernabeu when Real Madrid kick off on Sunday August 19.
