Valverde had great years in the Basque Country

The sporting trajectory of Ernesto Valverde is intimately linked with Bilbao and Athletic Club, where he spent a large part of his career as a player and as a cocah. The Ant returns to the San Mames for the first time with emotions running high.

However the professionalism of the coach obliges him to manage these feelings coming up to the game. Valverde recognised that only afterwards can the emotions and memories flow.

"In the build-up to the game you try to focus on your own side, afterwards you have more time to think," said Valverde in a video for Barcelona. "Let's see what sensations I have when I get to the stadium and when I go right down the tunnel to the dressing room instead of to the left."

Valverde recognised that at Athletic he was happy "and to be happy as a coach is not easy because you live permanently with tension", anda he said that he made good friends in Bilbao "with the board, the players, members of the technical team, the relationships are still there."
