Historic Lionel Messi breaks Barcelona's La Liga appearance record
The Barça captain made his 506th top-flight appearance against Cadiz on Sunday
Lionel Messi has overtaken Xavi Hernandez as Barcelona's all-time record appearance maker in La Liga.
Messi, 33, made his 506th top-flight appearance on Sunday in Barça's 1-1 draw against Cadiz at Camp Nou. Xavi played 505 matches in the Primera Division.
Despite scoring a penalty against Cadiz, Messi's afternoon ended in disappointment as Barça were held and missed the chance to close the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid to six points.
Messi made his first appearance in La Liga on Oct. 16, 2004, coming as a substitute against Espanyol in Montjuic.
He is also the league's top scorer, with 460 goals now following his strike against Cadiz, and he has won the La Liga title on 10 occasions.
