The Haaland clause which could tempt Barça or Madrid in 2024

The Manchester City striker will be available for €200m in just over 18 months

Despite signing a five year deal with Manchester City, Erling Haaland's release clause is on everyone's lips. The Norway star's start to the season and his impact on the Premier League have only increased the rumours about his future. In this sense, the focus has fallen on the clause which could allow him to leave the English side in the future.

In England, there is talk of a €200 million release clause which kicks in in the summer of 2024. The Athletic detail the clause in a report on Tuesday: at the moment, Haaland does not have any clause for any club in any country.

However, that will change in 2024. From that summer, his release clause will be €200m, although only for clubs playing outside of the Premier League. Clubs in England will not be able to pay said clause.

Barça and Madrid

In Real Madrid's case, there is no special clause, as suggested, and they would also have to pay €200m. That means Haaland would cost either Madrid or Barcelona the exact same amount.

Pep Guardiola was clear recently when asked about a Madrid clause: "It is not true, there is no specific release clause for Real Madrid or any other team."

The Athletic also explain that the clause will reduce each season. Therefore, in 2025 it will be cut down from €200m and then again in 2026, albeit, once again, not for Premier League sides.

Robert Lewandowski has a contract at Barça until 2026.

Remember that Haaland is only 22 and has signed terms with City until 2027. The doubt now is if he will fulfill those five years or if he will force a transfer before.
