Gerard Pique 'warned' De Ligt over Barcelona signing
The defenders would have been competing for the same spot in the team
Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt could have come to Barcelona in 2019, but in the end he went to Italy from Ajax because he knew he would play more than at Camp Nou.
Like Frenkie de Jong, Barcelona wanted him, so in his Juve deal he put in a clause saying he could leave for Barcelona in the coming sessions for a similar cost to what Juve paid Ajax.
De Ligt badly wanted to sign for Barcelona but during negotiations he learned a detail which made him change his mind.
He met Gerard Pique on a holiday to the Caribbean and they sp9oke about his possible arrival. Pique told him not to come because he would not get minutes at Camp Nou. Pique and Lenglet were the centre-backs at the time under Valverde, with Lenglet on the left, Pique on the right. De Ligt plays on Pique’s side. De Ligt felt threatened and went to Juve. They say Pique denies this incident but De Ligt and Raiola, no.
