Gerard Pique returns to hostile territory for a double dose
The Barca defender is detested in the Spanish capital and the Bernabeu will let him know it
Hated by some, loved by others, it’s hard for Gerard Pique to leave people indifferent. The Barcelona defender has decided - well, probably wasn’t an actual decision, more his way of being - not to keep quiet and say what he likes in front of the cameras despite it gaining him enemies or being politically incorrect.
Most elite sportspeople keep quiet, but Pique, when given a microphone, does nothing of the sort.
The Barca defender generates controversy. He’s admired and respected in some quarters, detested in others - and one of those is at Real Madrid.
And now Pique heads to the heart of Los Blancos to play twice in four days. He’s not expecting a nice welcome, more so after his latest controversial contributions.
The basketball Copa del Rey final was commented on by Pique, who said it was “lucky that Real Madrid didn’t play more sports” because they would be whining about refereeing in handball or hockey.
Madrid didn’t take it well. Alvaro Arbeloa hit back.
Another angle Pique took a pop at Madrid in was over their complaints that Barca had more rest after playing on Saturday.
Pique said: “In the first league game we had, they had an extra day’s rest and we won 5-1.”
