Gerard Pique announces that all Barca captains will take pay cut

The defender did it first for the registrations of Memphis and Eric Garcia but the others will too

FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique confirmed he has taken a pay cut and explained that the other captains will follow suit in the coming days.

Speaking to Movistar after the win over Real Sociedad, in which he scored, Pique said: “I was born here, I grew up here, I’ve lived almost all my life here. This action was what needed to happen. I want to make it clear we’ve been in full contact with the other captains and they will do it soon too.

“I had to be the first, but this is a family and we move as one. All the captains intend to adjust to what the club needs. That’s the decision we have taken and we’re proud and looking forward to keep playing good football.”

Jordi Alba was booed by some supporters at the game, but Pique did not think it was right.

“We don’t come out to speak a lot and there can be misunderstandings. Now they needed an adjustment to make the registering of the players official, but the others are about to and are speaking with the club. Sometimes information that people receive is not true or lacks nuance. It’s not just what I’m doing but all the captains. The club asked us to make an effort and we’re doing so. I’m proud. The team and fans should move as one.”
