Fresneda, the surprise right back name Barca are looking at
At last week's summit meeting between Barça's top bods to plan next season's project, there was a lot of talk about the right-back spot. For Xavi it is not a priority as financial resources are limited, but the new sporting director, Deco, insisted that it would be good to bring in a specialist. And one of the names he is considering is Iván Fresneda, from Valladolid, for whom several European clubs are fighting for.
Fresneda is very much liked by the sporting department, who have followed him exhaustively this season. And the conditions for signing him could be favourable because as Valladolid have gone down, his buy-out clause is now 20 million euros. It remains to be seen whether that figure could be lowered further with the inclusion of a home-grown player, now that Barça Atlètic have failed to win promotion to the second division.
The Valladolid right-back has exploded this season. An international at youth level, he is one of the most sought-after full-backs by European clubs. In fact, his agent confirmed that up to 30 clubs had approached them to enquire about his situation. Valladolid have him on the market and Barça know they must move soon.
The rumour mill around Fresneda is buzzing and it seems that Borussia Dortmund is the club that is pushing hardest at the moment although they have not confirmed their willingness to pay the clause. Newcastle, Arsenal, Milan and Atletico Madrid are four of the clubs that are also keeping a close eye on his situation.
Fresneda will turn 19 in September, but has had a superb season in the Primera despite his side's relegation. The former Valladolid coach Pacheta clearly bet on him and the boy has shown that he is at a more than interesting level. His playing profile fits perfectly with the blaugrana style and he can be a real market opportunity. At Barça he is on the short-list of three players for the full-back position. A gamble and a surprise.
