Frenkie de Jong another option to join the captain group at Barcelona
There will be a shake-up next season with Pique, Busquets and Alba all gone
Gerard Piqué left six months ago and will be followed by Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in June, three captains who have worn the armband in recent years. The time has come to choose new leadership, beyond the natural leadership that each one exercises without the need to be appointed by his teammates, as Xavi himself has recently explained.
The names of Sergi Roberto and Ter Stegen, because they already are among the four-captain group, are among those who, if nothing happens, will continue to hold the position, but there will be new developments.
Lewandowski, Araujo and Pedri have been mentioned, but one of the most important players in the team and whose commitment to the club is beyond doubt has gone unnoticed: Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman, in fact, wore the 'senyera' for the first time in Valladolid, when none of the captains were on the pitch.
He is the second most experienced player in the squad behind Dembélé and not counting Sergi Roberto, of course. And last summer he showed that his only objective is to honour the Barça shirt. There are voices in the dressing room that see him as a very good option to represent them.
