France Football reveal Ballon d'Or changes after FIFA divorce

The French publication will once again take full control of the award after their deal with FIFA ended

The magazine France Football revealed on Monday some of the changes to the Ballon d'OR after the French publication's divorce from FIFA.

Since 2010, the Ballon d'Or had coupled with the FIFA World Player award to name the best player in the world, but the two prizes have now split up.

France Football will continue to present the Ballon d'Or, although it's not clear if FIFA will resurrect their award.

As they had been doing since 1956, France Football will gather votes from journalists across Europe to decide who's been the best players in Europe throughout the calendar year.

The vote will determine the 30 best players, not 23 as had been the case in recent seasons.

Meanwhile, the three finalists will disappear. For the united version FIFA and France Football had revealed the names of the top three players, who would travel to Zurich for the annual gala.

The date will also change from January to December, while the venue will now probably be Paris.

France Football had sold the rights to FIFA in exchange for 15 million euros. That fixed price handed world football's governing body the prize until 2015, with it renamed the FIFA Ballon d'Or.
