First reports about Leo Messi's nose after brutal blow against Man United
Smalling hit Messi in the face which saw him sustain a nose bleed
Alarm bells were ringing as Lionel Messi took a whack in the face during Barcelona's 1-0 win at Manchester United on Wednesday in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Chris Smalling hit the Argentine in the 30th minute and it took Messi a few minutes to recover, attended by Barca medics. Messi was bleeding from his nose and also suffered a knock to his eye.
He was able to continue playing but was not at his best.
At the end of the game, Ernesto Valverde said: "Messi has a bad hematoma. He took a big blow and we have to see how he is." Barca will run tests on Messi on Thursday to find out how bad the problem is.
