In the month of April they led the way with a total of 148 million interactions, a figure higher than any NBA team

Social media is still a relatively young and growing market but it continues to give us glimpses into what people are talking about and what they find the most important. For brands, it's become an essential tool to see what's happening amongst their followers.

Until now the rankings of teams and brands has been about follower counts and nothing else. They simply added how many you had on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and that was your 'reach'. Incredible numbers but also deceptive. People often follow various teams or over multiple accounts and this distorts the real figure.

Now the criteria has changed and the rankings are based off interactions instead. It's a fairer and more honest reflection of how your brand or entity is doing.

Using this system Deportes & Finanzas have revealed the ten most popular teams in the world and across all sports based on interactions for the month of April. FC Barcelona are way out in front on 148 million interactions on social media. After them comes Liverpool (109 million); Mumbai Indians (92.7); Juventus (87.7); Chennai Super Kings (84.1); Manchester United (82.4); Galatasaray (50.4); Golden State Warriors (42.9); Flamengo (36.6) and Manchester City (36.5).
