The sales of Vidal and Semedo could open the door to new arrivals

Barcelona are working on completing their squad before the transfer deadline, with up to four signings possible before the window closes.

The first step is to sell unwanted players and shift big earners to lighten the wage bill. In that sense, Arturo Vidal joined Ivan Rakitic in heading out the door on Tuesday, while Luis Suarez and Nelson Semedo are also surplus to requirements. In the case of Semedo, a move to Wolves is done, but Suarez's Atletico switch has become complicated.

With Semedo set to go and Moussa Wague gone, Ronald Koeman only has Sergi Roberto ar right-back. Barça want to sign Ajax's Sergiño Dest and have asked about him. The cost is around 25 million euros and Bayern Munich currently lead the chase.

Koeman knows him well and believes he has the necessary quality. Max Aarons is another option but Norwich City are not keen on selling. The third candidate is Emerson, who Barça can recall, at a cost, from Real Betis.

The next position is centre-back. Barça want to bring back Eric Garcia and are negotiating with Manchester City. He's out of contract and can leave for free next summer. There's no rush, though, as Koeman still has five central defenders for now: Pique, Lenglet,  Araujo, Umtiti and Todibo.

Meanwhile, Koeman would also like a midfielder. The first name to emerge was Wijnaldum but Jurgen Klopp convinced the Dutchman to remain at Liverpool. Koeman has five midfielders (De Jong, Busquets, Pjanic, Aleñá and Riqui Puig) and if no one goes, it's unlikely anyone new will arrive.

Finally, Barça want a forward to cover Suarez's exit. The idea was Lautaro Martinez but the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic have put the brakes on that deal. In the current market, no one can pay 100 million euros for a player.

Koeman's offered a cheaper option: Memphis Depay. The Lyon attacker has one year to run on his deal but is not a classic No.9.
