Ernesto Valverde: When they come back like that, there's no excuse

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde spoke to the media after Liverpool beat the Catalans 4-0 in the UCL semi second leg, to progress 4-3 on aggregate. Here are the key quotes.

Repeat: The most painful thing is to repeat [what happened in Rome]. It happened last season and it has happened again. It was a different game [to last year]. Liverpool had a brilliant start, we concede the first goal quickly but we reacted well had chances to score. We got into their box in dangerous positions but we didn't take those chances. When you lose 4-0 you can't have any excuses. They were better than us and we have to accept it.

Preparation: We were prepared after what happened last year but it has happened again. We kept feeding their confidence. The second and third goals were the boost they needed to keep going. The changes helped us a bit after the third goal but then we conceded this simple fourth goal that cost us the tie. I don't know really what happened [with that goal]. All the goals are errors from someone. If we look at the goals we have conceded, they are all errors of some kind. We were caught by surprise [for the fourth goal], I imagine we were ball watching. We were very focused on set plays because they are the best team in the Premier League at dead balls and we were caught by surprise.

Criticism: With a collapse of this nature, we will have a few horrible days ahead. Then we have to come out of it with time. Ahead of us we have league games to play, the cup final to play. Right now we are devastated.

Apologies: We're really sorry to the fans, we all play, all that we do is to make the fans happy, to make them proud of us, everyone expects us to win all the time but we have lost and in a very painful way. This is the first game we have lost in the Champions League this season but we are out. The players are the ones that play on the pitch, they are hurting more than anyone.

Future: I don't know how this affects my future. We haven't had time to think about those things. But here we are and the coach has to take responsibility.
