The Barcelona president thinks Abidal made a mistake but was not going to axe him

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu met with Eric Abidal for over two hours to quieten down the crisis that began with his interview in Diario SPORT. Lionel Messi hit back at Abidal and it all kicked off.

The president thought that the sporting director was wrong to say that players "weren't happy or working hard" under Valverde. However, he did not plan to sack him, not only because he had backed him a few hours earlier but, having spoken to Messi that morning too, saw the situation as reconciliable.

Bartomeu thinks it would be bad to change sporting director right now, taking into account that it would open more problems and Barcelona may have to take on a signing right away to replace Dembele. The truth is that Bartomeu has opted for prudence, rather than a move that could destabilise the club further.
