The desperation of Sergi Barjuan made his dream debut bitter
The interim coach was able to take charge of a first team match for the first time
He ran up and down the left wing at Camp Nou for nine seasons. The ‘motorbike’, was a left back with lungs, capable of attacking and defending as if there was no tomorrow. A La Masia product, he finished his playing career in 2005. Four years after that he started coaching at Barcelona and 12 years further on, he coached the first team at Camp Nou against Alaves.
It was a special day for Sergi Barjuan, who is in charge by chance but acting with professionalism and determination. He started with a jacket on and ended up with his shirt in disarray; it was a stressful night.
On his feet, often trying to correct the players, he had words with Mingueza and Gerard Pique.
After Memphis Depay broke the deadlock, Luis Rioja equalised instantly and it left Barjuan annoyed.
“With that move, you have to stop him, stick out a leg even if you get a booking. We’re here so the players understand that.” Clearer than water. A first day worsened by that moment but still one he will never forget.
