De Jong: I don't know what number, but the name will be De Jong

The Dutch starlet is lookingn ahead to his move to Barcelona

"My shirt number at Barcelona has still not been confirmed, but the name will simply be De Jong." With the league virtually won for Ajax, the cup won -- a trophy that had resisted them since 2010 -- and the Champions League over at the semifinal stage, Frenkie de Jong is thinking about his future at Barça. His comments go against what Nike had hoped, which was for him to wear Frenkie on the back of his shirt.

The shirt number question will remain in the air. Carles Aleña wears 21 at the moment, which is what De Jong wears at Ajax. Making the academy graduate change his number could be a problem, given he's part of the club's future and may feel pushed out.

While confirming what name he will have on his shirt, De Jong didn't want to go into many more details. The midfielder took in good humour a question about how much money he will make at Camp Nou. "What am I going to earn? [Laughs]. That's not something I will discuss. I am happy with what I am doing now and what I am going to do at Barça. Money does not necessarily buy happiness."

LOVE FOR AJAX

"I cannot make the promise that I will return to Ajax one day. No one knows what the future holds. One thing I can say is I love Ajax. I think it's a fantastic club. I definitely won't rule out coming back."

De Jong was also asked about teammate Matthijs de Ligt and what he will do with his fuutre with Barça also keen on the centre-back.

"Honestly, I don't know what De Ligt's going to do, it's his decision, but I wouldn't mind it he joined Barcelona. It would be good to be ttogether and really good for Barça to sign a player that they can use in the coming years," Frenkie said.
