Lionel Messi is an institution for Barcelonismo. The club doesn't make sense without the best player in the world and arguably the best player in history. On Sunday it is the 12th anniversary of his official debut for Barcelona, which took place on October 16, 2004, against Espanyol at Montjuic. It changed the life of the player and the club.
This is a special date. Although he played his first game in 2003, in a friendly at the inauguration of Porto's stadium, his official debut under Frank Rijkaard was a few months more in coming.
He came on in the 82nd minute of the game against Espanyol in week seven of the 2004-05 season, with the Blaugrana winning 1-0. Frank Rijkaard decided to take off Deco, bringing on Messi, 17 years and 22 days old, with the No 30 on his back.
