Two vice presidents were among those to quite on Thursday night

Six Barcelona board members, including the vice presidents Emili Rousaud and Enrique Tombas, handed in their resignations to president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Thursday.

Bartomeu had earlier in the week phoned Rousaud and Tombas to request they step down because he has lost confidence in them. He made the same request of the directors Sílvio Elías and Josep Pont, who were also among the six to step down.

The surprise was that two more directors decided to walk away as well: Maria Teixidor and Jordi Calsamiglia. The six resigned in the form of a letter signed by each of them and said their decision was "irrevocable."

The social media scandal, which has been labeled BarçaGate, is the main reason for their resignations, although they also said they had little faith in the current regime's ability to lead the club forward post-coronavirus pandemic.

Finally, they called for Bartomeu to bring elections forward. They are due to be held in 2021 but they said the sooner the better. Bartomeu will not be able to run as he has served two terms.
