The former Liverpool playmaker will return to England for the rest of the season

Barcelona and Aston Villa have reached an agreement for Philippe Coutinho to move to the Premier Legue club on loan until the end of the season.

"Aston Villa and FC Barcelona have agreed terms for Philippe Coutinho to spend the rest of this season on loan at Villa Park," the English side confirmed Friday.

"The agreement, which is subject to the player completing a medical and receiving a work permit, also includes an option to buy and Philippe will travel to Birmingham in the next 48 hours.

The insistence of Steven Gerrard, Coutinho's former Liverpool teammate, proved key in convincing Coutinho to make the move to Villa Park.

Coutinho joined Barça in 2018 as their club-record signing but first-team football has been limited this season and he wants to play regularly ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

Barça hope the departure of Coutinho will give them enough room within their salary limit to be able to register Ferran Torres.
