Barça want to save on the French defender's salary this season

Barcelona have offered Clément Lenglet the possibility of mutual termination of his contract to speed up his departure from the club, although the player has so far rejected the offer.

Lenglet is expected to be paid a hefty salary this season -- between €12 and 16 million euros -- due to deferrals from previous seasons.

The club, however, wants to expedite the French defender's case as soon as possible, among other reasons to free up space on their wage bill.

That's why they have offered him a free transfer, so that the player can be transferred to another club at zero cost: in that scenario, Barça would save on his earnings.

In the last few hours, another club has contacted Barça to ask about Lenglet. It is Olympique Lyon, who have enquired about the player's contractual situation.

In the event that Barça manage to transfer Lenglet (albeit at zero cost), the club will at least try to secure 50 percent of a future sale of the player over the next three seasons.

Another scenario being contemplated by the club, which would be 'plan B', is to send Lenglet on loan to another club. It is not Barça's preferred formula, but at least the club would save part (or even all) of his wages.

Sevilla, who have made the worst start to the league season in their history (three defeats in the first three games), are also trying to strengthen their defence with Lenglet, who previously played for Sevilla in the 2017-18 season.
