Chiellini explains how to mark Ronaldo and how to mark Messi

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini spoke about the differences between marking Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in an interview with Eurosport Italia.

The Italian international was the subject of Luis Suarez's bite at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which saw the Uruguayan banned from making his Barcelona debut until October of the same year.

However, it was another Barça player he was speaking about in his most recent interview.

Chiellini explained that when he faces Real Madrid's Ronaldo, he tries to make sure he keeps him on his right foot. He has more 'holy' tactics when it comes to stopping Messi, though.

“In the last few years the role of the defender has been re-evaluated,” he said. “Everyone has to be good at understanding their role.

"Experience helps you to read certain situations better and make less mistakes in terms of behaviour. Knowledge of the opponent is essential, too, individually as well as the team.

“How do you mark Cristiano Ronaldo? You try not to leave him alone, don’t let him shoot on his right foot. And Lionel Messi? Just make the sign of the cross...”

Finally, Chiellini also spoke about last season's Champions League final loss to Barça: "We could have won it because we had chances.

"When the game finished we knew we could’ve done better. If we have another opportunity we’ll arrive better prepared."
