Barcelona's sporting director expressed the club's desire to sign the defender
Eric Abidal was in Amsterdam last Wednesday, where he had dinner with Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, according to the show 'El club de la Mitjanit' on 'Catalunya Radio'.
Aware of the level of interest in De Ligt, Barça's sporting director travelled himself to speak to the young defender and explain why he fits perfectly into the club's plans in the future.
As revealed by SPORT, De Ligt is the primary objective for Barça to improve their squad next summer, ahead of Frenkie de Jong, his Ajax teammate who plays in midfield.
Abidal has also spoke with de Jong, but via telephone, to indicate the club's interest.
Barcelona had already began talks with De Ligt through his agent. The direct contact with the player was to check his willingness to complete a move at the end of the season.
