Sevilla Champions League KO limits the Argentine's options

The Andalusian club are hoping to extend Sampaoli's deal

Jorge Sampaoli's chances of becoming the next Barcelona manager took a hit as Sevilla lost in the Champions League to Leicester City.

The Argentine coach is one of the candidates to replace Luis Enrique but the board are interested to see how Sevilla's results develop under him.

At the moment they are out of the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. In la Liga they are still third but have dropped points in their last two outings.

Barça and Madrid have moved clear and they have a difficult weekend against Atletico Madrid, who could end their title hopes and move closer to Sampaoli's men.

At the moment, however, they have just three points less than Barça, though. Madrid are five clear of them with a game in hand.

Sampaoli's options have enormously reduced despite being wanted by the fans (he's won most polls) and also the dressing room (many players would back his appointment).

Barça were waiting to see how Sevilla did in Europe and la Liga and Catalunya Radio reported on Tuesday that he'd decided to renew with Sevilla amid a lack of genuine interest from Barça.

Sampaoli, asked after the Leicester game 'Sevilla, Barça... where do you see yourself?' responded: "I see myself sitting at home in bed, hurting after my dream escaped."
