Josep Maria Bartomeu is no longer the Barcelona president.
After an urgent board meeting called on Tuesday, Bartomeu and the rest of the board of directors decided to resign rather than face the vote of no confidence against them.
Bartomeu and the board tried until the last minute to get the Catalan government to backtrack on their decision to allow the referendum.
The board said they wanted to celebrate the vote of no confidence but that they had to consider the voting members' safety in the middle of a global pandemic.
Given they were forced to hold the vote, Bartomeu and the board felt they were left with no choice but to step down.
