Braithwaite after Denmark's England loss: I have to be careful what I say
An extra-time penalty made the difference as England reached Sunday's final at Wembley
Barcelona's last man standing at Euro 2020 was knocked out on Wednesday as Martin Braithwaite's Denmark lost to England in controversial circumstances.
The semifinal at Wembley was tied at 1-1 in extra-time when the referee gave a penalty for what he adjudged to be a foul on Raheem Sterling.
Harry Kane missed the spot-kick but scored the rebound to send England into the final against Italy on Sunday.
“We have to swallow that," Braithwaite told reporters. "We are proud, but also incredibly disappointed in the way it happened. I don’t think it was entirely fair, but I have to be careful what I say.
“There is no one to blame, there was no penalty and it was judged a bit harshly. We don’t know if it was because of Maehle or Mathias, but Maehle has been fantastic in this tournament and that’s what everyone will remember. ”
Denmark lost star player Christian Eriksen in the first game to a heart problem and lost their first two games. However, as Eriksen recovered in hospital, they bounced back to beat Russia 4-1 and make the last 16 before beating Wales and the Czech Republic.
Braithwaite added: “Now, in the moment, I am disappointed, but we have had many excellent experiences and we are very grateful for the support we have received. It has been moving and something we have never experienced before."
