The Barça president tried time and again to keep the midfielder at Camp Nou

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu didn't want too big a role in the goodbye to Andres Iniesta at Camp Nou on Friday.

Bartomeu appeared on the stage erected at Camp Nou briefly at the end and revealed how hard the club had tried to convince the midfielder to extend his stay.

"We tried everything," he said when asked what he'd done. "We spoke with him a lot and told him that he still has a lot of football to offer us, but it's his decision and we must respect it.

"We even spoke on the sofa at his house after the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla, one last attempt [to get him to stay at Barça]."

Bartomeu added: "But Andres, this isn't goodbye, it's see you later. You have a contract at Barça for life and after this parentheses, you will return to Barça. I am sure."
