The Barca president was pleased that Real Madrid were knocked out by Ajax

Is it a day of celebration for Barcelona? That’s what president Josep Maria Bartomeu was asked on Cadena Ser radio after Real Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League by Ajax on Tuesday.

“I see satisfaction on your face,” said radio host Cuni to Bartomeu. And it’s obvious the Barca chief was pleased about Madrid’s collapse. The president didn’t hide it.

“I saw the game and, look, one less strong rival in the Champions League, that’s good,” said Bartomeu.

For the president, it is better to highlight Barca’s success than Madrid’s failures.

“The sporting world is very difficult. We should give value to Barca’s good era since 2004. I would not speak about the disappointments of the other teams.”

Asked about Dani Carvajal’s evaluation of Madrid’s season as “shit”, Bartomeu added: “Each one says what he believes about his team. I don’t want to talk about Madrid, I want to talk about Barca.”

On Frenkie de Jong’s performance, Bartomeu said: “As a Barca fan I wanted Frenkie to win. It was his objective to beat Real Madrid.”
